Porcelain Veneers | Strathcona Dental Clinic | General & Family Dentist | South Edmonton

At Strathcona Dental Clinic, we provide cosmetic dental treatments that help improve your smile and give you a reason to show off your smile. One of the methods used to correct flaws in teeth such as cracks, gaps, chipped or worn edges, or discolouration is through the application of porcelain veneers.

What are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain Veneers | Strathcona Dental Clinic | General & Family Dentist | South Edmonton

Porcelain veneers are custom-made wafer-thin shells of porcelain that are bonded to the front surface of your teeth to improve colour and shape. They can be used to quickly improve a wide range of imperfections, but they are not always the right choice for everyone. They can be used to close spaces between teeth, whiten stained or dark teeth, or lengthen small or misshapen teeth. When front teeth are chipped or starting to wear, veneers can protect them from damage and restore their original appearance. Veneers are custom-made to fit your mouth perfectly and usually take at least two dental visits for their application.

The Veneer Process

Porcelain Veneers | Strathcona Dental Clinic | General & Family Dentist | South Edmonton

At your first visit, a thin layer of enamel is removed from the tooth or teeth being treated so that there is room for the veneers to attach to your teeth. Once the layer is removed, your dentist will make an impression of your teeth from which your custom-made porcelain veneers will be made.

Temporary veneers will be applied and worn until your permanent ones are ready. The temporary veneers are very fragile and must be treated gently while you are eating and cleaning so that they do not come loose while you wait for your next appointment.

At your second visit, your dentist will remove the temporary veneers. Using dental cement and a curing light, we will glue each veneer into place. Your new and improved smile will then be complete!

Circumstances that Rule Out Using Veneers

TMD/TMJ Therapy | Strathcona Dental Clinic | General & Family Dentist | South Edmonton

In some cases, your dentist may recommend a treatment other than porcelain veneers. Here are some of the reasons you may not be the best candidate for porcelain veneers:

  • Tooth decay or the teeth to be covered are in an area where gum disease is present.
  • Not enough enamel to secure the porcelain veneer properly.
  • The chip or crack is too large and requires a full-coverage restoration, such as a crown
  • If you grind or clench your teeth (bruxism), you risk chipping and breaking your porcelain veneers.

The oral health team at Strathcona Dental Clinic would love to help you achieve the smile of your dreams! If you would like to learn more about porcelain veneers and how they might be right for you, call Strathcona Dental Clinic at (780) 433-1154, and we will be happy to assist you.
