What are Dental Crowns?

Dental Crowns | Strathcona Dental Clinic | General & Family Dentist | South Edmonton

Also referred to as “caps,” dental crowns are hollow covers that replace the outer 1mm or so of a tooth to bolster its strength, protect its structure and/or improve its appearance. Crowns are the preferred treatment for root-canaled teeth and those with large fillings involving cusps as they provide added strength against breakage and fractures. Crowns are also used cosmetically to improve the appearance of natural teeth that are malformed, malpositioned or discoloured.

Dental Crowns can be made of different materials. Depending on the location of the crown, its size, and the bite force in the area, you and your dentist at Strathcona Dental Clinic can decide on the best crown for you.

1. All-Metal Crowns: such as gold crowns are highly durable and can withstand greater bite forces, and can be ideal for some molar crowns.
2. Porcelain Fused to Metal are made of porcelain fused to a precious metal
3. All-Ceramic or porcelain crowns are the most natural-looking and aesthetically pleasing as they can resemble the translucency of natural teeth.

What to Expect When Getting a Dental Crown

Dental Crowns | Strathcona Dental Clinic | General & Family Dentist | South Edmonton

Dental crowns are made in a lab by dental technicians from impressions of your prepared tooth or teeth, then cemented over that tooth, up to the gum line. Crowning a tooth is a minimum five-step procedure that we strive to make as comfortable and anxiety-free as possible. The steps for getting a dental crown include:

  1. Application of a local anesthetic
  2. Using specialized tools, smoothing the tooth down to prepare for the dental crown
  3. A dental impression of your prepared tooth and the surrounding teeth will be taken and sent to the lab
  4. A temporary resin crown will be applied while you wait for your permanent crown
  5. At a subsequent visit, the permanent crown that was made from your dental impression will be fitted and cemented into place
