Teeth Cleaning and Preventing Gingivitis at Our Edmonton Dental Clinic

Are you looking for a Teeth Cleaning in Edmonton? Your oral health team at Strathcona Dental Clinic firmly believes that preventative dentistry is critical for maintaining healthy teeth and gums. Regular professional deep teeth cleaning, fluoride application and gum disease treatment in addition to your regular personal dental hygiene work to ensure your teeth and gums have their best chance to last you a lifetime.

Teeth Cleaning

Strathcona Dental recommends a professional dental cleaning at least twice per year for optimal oral health. During your appointment, your hygienist will check the health of your mouth, teeth, and gums before beginning. The cleaning will consist of teeth scaling and teeth polishing, which includes the use of specialized instruments to remove any plaque and tartar buildup that has formed on your teeth. You may also receive a fluoride application to help protect your teeth and if any problems are suspected, x-rays may be recommended.

Benefits to professional teeth cleaning include:

  • Cavity prevention through the removal of plaque.
  • Preventing tooth loss due to gum disease.
  • A brighter, cleaner smile.
  • Breath freshening due to the removal of plaque and tartar buildup.
  • Early detection of problems that can become expensive procedures in the future.

Gum Disease Prevention and Treatment

Gingivitis or gum disease in its earliest stages is simply inflammation in your gums. Left untreated, the inflammation can worsen and lead to serious gum disease called periodontitis, which can eventually lead to tooth loss and other physical ailments.

Symptoms of Gingivitis include:

  • Swollen or irritated gums
  • Gums that appear dark red or purple in colour.
  • Bad breath you are unable to control.
  • Receding gums.
  • Bleeding gums while brushing your teeth.

While the most common cause of gingivitis is due to plaque buildup, some illnesses, family history and smoking cigarettes can all contribute to poor gum health. It is very important to notify your Strathcona Dental hygienist if you have any sign of gum disease or any of the possible contributors to the disease apply to you so the best treatment plan for your situation can be developed.

Preventing Gingivitis

  1. Brush your teeth at least twice a day.
  2. Floss once a day, preferably before going to bed.
  3. Have check-ups/exams and teeth cleanings done regularly.
