Oral Injuries Causing Tooth Loss

A same-day appointment is especially important if you have lost a permanent tooth due to an oral injury. If you act quickly and contact us right away, we may be able to save your tooth or teeth that have been knocked out. In the event of losing a permanent tooth, the following steps should be followed to maximize the odds of successful re-implantation:

  • Handle the tooth with care and avoid touching the root.
  • If the tooth has dirt on it, hold it by the crown portion and rinse it with milk. Water can be used if milk is not available. Make sure you do not rub or otherwise dry the tooth after rinsing to avoid extra damage.
  • Keep the tooth moist by either soaking it in milk or holding it in your mouth between your cheek and gums.
  • See your Strathcona Dental team as soon as possible. Your best chance at re-implantation is within an hour of the injury.

Your oral health is important to your Strathcona Dental Clinic team. We want you to know that we are at your service in the event you require emergency dental services. Keep our number handy and contact us immediately if you experience dental emergencies, oral injuries or sudden pain. We're here to help.
