Porcelain Veneers at Edmonton's Strathcona Dental Clinic
Strathcona Dental Clinic in Edmonton can perform cosmetic dental treatments that will boost your confidence and give you reason to show off your improved smile. One of the methods used to correct flaws in teeth such as cracks, gaps, a chipped tooth or discolouration is through the application of porcelain veneers.
Porcelain Veneers for Your Teeth
Porcelain veneers are thin shells most often crafted from porcelain that are cemented to the front of your teeth. Since veneers are custom-made to fit your mouth perfectly, they usually take at least two dental visits for their application.
The Veneer Process
At your first visit, a thin layer of enamel is removed from the tooth or teeth to be covered. This removal is done so there is room for the veneers to be attached to your teeth. Once the layer is removed, your dentist will make a mold of your teeth from which your custom-made porcelain veneers will be made.
Temporary veneers will likely be applied and worn until your permanent ones are ready. The temporary ones are very fragile and must be treated gently while you are eating and cleaning so they will not come loose while you wait for your next appointment.
When your porcelain veneers are ready, you will come to see us and your dentist will remove the temporary ones. They will apply a mild chemical to your tooth or teeth receiving the veneers, to roughen the surface so they will stick more securely. Using a composite resin cement, your dentist will glue each veneer into place. Your new and improved smile will be complete.
Circumstances that Rule Out Using Veneers
In some cases, your dentist may recommend a treatment other than porcelain veneers. Here are some of the reasons you may not be the best candidate for this process:
- If you have tooth decay or the teeth to be covered are in an area where gum disease is present.
- Not enough enamel to secure the porcelain veneer properly.
- The chip or crack is too large and requires a crown rather than covering with a veneer.
- If you grind or clench your teeth (bruxism), you risk chipping and breaking your porcelain veneers.
